Cochlear is the leading manufacturer of cochlear hearing implants, which require major surgery, unlike a hearing aid. Cochlear operates in more than 100 countries around the world, but the US remains its most important market. Major risks include technological obsolescence, recalls and a reduction in public health rebates for recipients. Cochlear's competitors include Advanced Bionics and the much smaller Med-El.
