AXA was formed as part of the demutualisation and reorganisation of National Mutual Life and a related investment by AXA, which acquired 51% of National Mutual in 1995. AXA, an international insurance and financial services group based in France, is one of the world's largest insurance groups. AXA has pursued its life insurance strategy in Australia, NZ and Asia through AXA. In 1998, AXA increased its interest in National Mutual Asia from 69% to 74%. AXA restructured in 1998 to centralise its Australian and NZ operations under one executive team. National Mutual Asia was renamed AXA China Region and acquired mainland China life insurance interests from AXA in 1999. Activities AXA is a leading provider of insurance, superannuation and savings products throughout Australia, NZ and Asia. AXA's Australian and NZ operations comprise the funds management, risk, health, lending and operations of the company: NM Life, a life insurance and superannuation broker in Australia and NZ with a 14% share of inforce regular premiums; NM Funds Management, the fourth largest fund manager in Australia overseeing investment totalling $25bn; NM Health, the third largest Australian health insurer; and Australian Casualty & Life. AXA China Region (formerly NM Asia) is the second largest life insurance group in Hong Kong and Macau, and also has interests in the developing mainland China insurance market.
